Here’s How a Massive Cyberattack Could Happen To Us

The Petya Ransomware attack hit globally, but one country, in particular, was devastated by it. The Ukrainian infrastructure was brought own by the attack, where the epicenter occurred, and now, experts are suggesting that it may have been deliberate and state-sponsored.

The ostensible purpose of all that damage was to make money — and yet there’s very little money to be found. Most ransomware flies under the radar, quietly collecting payouts from companies eager to get their data back and decrypting systems as payments come in. But Petya seems to have been incapable of decrypting infected machines, and its payout method was bizarrely complex, hinging on a single email address that was shut down almost as soon as the malware made headlines. As of this morning, the Bitcoin wallet associated with the attack had received just $10,000, a relatively meager payout by ransomware standards.

It leads to an uncomfortable question: what if money wasn’t the point? What if the attackers just wanted to cause damage to Ukraine? (source)

This is not the first time Ukraine has been under siege by cyberattack. In fact, the battle has been nearly constant for quite some time.

Ukrainian cybersecurity analysts view Ukraine as the primary target, and the Petya outbreak as just another strike in their ongoing cyberwar with organized and relentless hackers that the Ukrainian government has publicly linked to Russian state actors. “I think this was directed at us,” says Roman Boyarchuk, the head of the Center for Cyber Protection within Ukraine’s State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection. “This is definitely not criminal. It is more likely state-sponsored.”

 As for whether that state sponsor was Russia, “It’s difficult to imagine anyone else would want to do this,” Boyarchuk says.

Boyarchuk points to the timing of the attack, just before Ukraine’s Constitution Day, which celebrates the country’s post-Soviet independence…

More technical clues support that theory, some Ukrainian security researchers say. Kiev-based Information Systems Security Partners, which has acted as a first responder for several recent waves of cyberattacks on Ukrainian companies and government agencies, says it has found evidence that sophisticated hackers quietly infiltrated the networks of at least some Ukrainian targets two to three months before they triggered the ransomware that paralyzed those organizations. Security specialist Matthieu Suiche said in a blog post that it wasn’t a “ransomware” attack intended to make money, and is instead a “wiper” sent to eradicate data.

The fact of pretending to be a ransomware while being in fact a nation state attack — especially since WannaCry proved that widely spread ransomware aren’t financially profitable — is in our opinion a very subtle way from the attacker to control the narrative of the attack. (source)

Forensic analyst Oleksii Yasinsky told Wired that the intent was not money, even though this presented as a ransomware attack.

Rather than just encrypting infected hard drives and demanding $300 in Bitcoin for the decryption key, in some cases it simply wiped machines on the same network, deleting a victim computer’s deep-seated master boot record, which tells it how to load its operating system. Yasinsky argues that this behavior indicates the attackers weren’t, in fact, trying to extort payments from those victims but instead wanted to cause maximum disruption. (source)

They wanted to cause maximum disruption. Now, isn’t that just about the scariest thought ever?

What if the US was hit by a similar cyberattack?

Let’s go a little further down this rabbit hole and imagine such an attack happening in the United States. Because, really, is it that far-fetched? In fact, is it possible that this is a dry run for a massive attack on the American infrastructure? Maybe they want to see what happens when they take down the essential systems of a modern country on a smaller scale first, in order to maximize the effects on a larger target.

Scary, but possible.

Everything we do revolves around computers these days.

Businesses keep their records there. Systems are automated there. It goes on and on. And with this particular virus, one expert said, “There IS NO KILL SWITCH.” It’s virtually unstoppable once it gets into a system and it eradicates everything.

You know how I’m always encouraging you to watch survival movies and read survival fiction to enhance your prepared mindset? Let’s use this real life scenario and wargame the situation based on the systems that were damaged in Ukraine and think this through.

Banking would be disrupted.

Many banks in Ukraine were hit by the attack, which means that people suddenly had no access to their money. Their credit and debit cards wouldn’t work and the ATMs were down.

In the United States, most folks use credit or debit as they go throughout their days. Gas pumps are set up to pay at the pump with your bank card. We think nothing of swiping our card at the grocery store or at lunch. We know we have money in there, and it’s less risky than carrying cash, in most folk’s minds.

But what if suddenly you couldn’t use your credit cards and debit cards? What if the ATM machines went dark and you couldn’t get any cash from them?

Imagine this happened when you were traveling on business, miles from home with a half empty gas tank. You wouldn’t be able to get a hotel room, get more fuel, get food – nothing at all unless you had cash on hand – and even if you DID have enough cash, there’d be other problems as you’ll see below.

You should always have enough cash and supplies on hand to manage for quite a while if commerce were to cease.

Gas stations would close.

In Ukraine, getting fuel was difficult.

Of course, it makes sense that getting gasoline would be pretty tricky. Most gas stations are set up as pay-at-the-pump, and if you have cash, you have to go inside, pay, and they reset the pump to allow you the allotted amount of fuel…on a computer.

As well, the gas pumps themselves are digital in just about every place I’ve been in the past few years. Unless you manage to find some anomaly of a gas station where everything is still manual, the fuel you had would be all you’d have until things reverted to normal.

Even if you could buy stuff, there might not be stuff to buy.

It wouldn’t take more than a day or two for the transport trucks to stop running, since the fuel wouldn’t be readily available. Since our stores use “just-in-time” inventory restocking, pickings would be thin within a week.

Here’s a breakdown of what would happen – and how fast it would happen – if the trucks stopped running.

Like I said, be prepped for this.

Business would be disrupted.

In Ukraine, the banks are offline, which means payment systems are also offline.

Most businesses link to banks to be able to take payments by debit or credit. Most people no longer carry around pockets full of cash, and even if they did, some businesses aren’t entirely equipped to take cash payments.

When I worked at a car dealership service department, half a lifetime ago, I recall getting the day off because we were utterly at a standstill when our systems went down. The technicians couldn’t do any kind of electronic repair (and let’s face it, these days, there’s a computer in your car controlling just about every aspect of its function), the advisers couldn’t invoice, no one could check to see if a job was covered under warranty…I’m sure that many other businesses are equally dependent.

Most retail businesses rely on the ability to scan items for the price and to track SKU numbers for inventory purposes. Their cash registers are inextricably linked to computers for both payment options, pricing, and inventory options. Commerce could grind immediately to a halt, which means, what you have on hand would be all you had until things were resolved. You could forget about getting goods or services.

With the banking systems inoperable, other systems would soon go down too.

Think about our day-to-day business. Most of us have things on autopay, like our mortgages, car payments, and other monthly recurring bills.

If the banking systems are completely shut down, then our automatic payments would also cease to work. This means that the businesses relying on those payments would immediately have a shortfall, something that could have long-term ramifications if the issue lasted for more than a few days. Once things came back online, there would be massive confusion and congestion as people tried to straighten out payments that didn’t go through.

Chaos.

Transportation could shut down.

In Ukraine, both the major airport in the capital and the national railway system were shut down.

An attack like this could hit travelers the hardest. Imagine being at an airport to catch a connecting flight, and then discovering all flights had been canceled. If the computer systems were all down, you wouldn’t be able to rent a car to drive the rest of the way, and you wouldn’t be able to get a hotel room without cash, and you wouldn’t be able to buy any food unless you had cash on hand for that.

Commuters who rely on transit like trains to get back and forth to work would be stranded and without ATM access, most would be without any options. This is why you must always have a Plan B to get home when you’re traveling, along with the appropriate gear and footwear to walk if necessary.

The grid would fail.

In Ukraine, the power grid went down across a broad swath of the country.

In an event like this, it isn’t out of the ordinary for the power to go out. Our grid is extremely susceptible to a malware attack and something called “cascading failure.”

…malware can induce what’s often referred to as a cascading failure. This is what caused the massive blackout that occurred in the Northeastern US and Canada back in 2003. An overgrown tree branch in Ohio touched a power line, which caused that section of the grid to overload and shut down. The electricity had to be transferred to other power lines, which in turn also became overloaded. This chain reaction continued until 55 million people were without power. (source)

This can begin to have broad ramifications very quickly:

• Most homes are reliant on the grid for heat or cooling.
• No lights.
• No hot water.
• Food in the refrigerator or freezer would begin to spoil.

All the basics of a long-term power outage would apply, multiplied by all of the other things going wrong at the same time. Always be ready for a two-week power outage at the bare minimum.

Water could become contaminated.

Without the systems that keep municipal water supplies treated and distributed, it wouldn’t take long for the water from the taps to become contaminated and unsafe to drink – if it still flowed at all. Buying water at the store would be difficult, if not impossible, for all the reasons mentioned above, and even if you could buy it, the supplies would run out very quickly as others realized the tap water was unsafe to consume.

Always be prepared with water storage, a plan to acquire more water, and a way to purify water.

Dangerous infrastructure systems could be at risk.

The Chernobyl nuclear plant lost its ability to monitor radiation with the usual computerized systems.

Because Chernobyl hasn’t already had enough issues. The plant is still not fully decommissioned after the horrible disaster in the 80s, and some people are still working there monitoring for radiation leaks. All systems have had to revert to manual ones due to the cyberattack.

The United States has 99 nuclear reactors in 30 states.  99 Chernobyls waiting to happen?

 Hospitals could be affected.

In the US, two hospitals in Pennsylvania were forced to cancel surgeries due to the Petya cyberattack.

During a widespread attack in the United States, there is potential for our medical system to be severely affected. Without access to patient records, terrible mistakes could occur. Many patient monitoring systems are computerized. Some life support machinery is tied into the grid. And what happens if the grid-down situation outlasts the fuel for the generators?

In a situation like that, there wouldn’t be much medical help available for incidents that occur during the disaster. You must keep some first aid and longer-term care supplies on hand, as well as informational guides to help you deal with health issues and emergencies as they arise. Know how to back this up with natural remedies in the event the situation outlasts your commercial supplies.

With all of this, unrest would erupt fairly quickly.

If the situation only lasted for a few days, society certainly wouldn’t break down. But if it stretched into weeks and more people began running out of the basics, we’d begin to see unrest on a massive scale. Think about it – what wouldn’t YOU do to take care of your hungry children?  Add to this the now-refugees stranded in airports and other travel centers across the country, with no supplies and no way to get home. It wouldn’t take long for the need to outstrip any governmental efforts to supply aid.

Long before such a thing ever occurs, you should protect yourself by keeping your mouth shut. No one needs to know that you’re stocked to the rafters and ready for a situation like this. Secondly, you need to be prepared to protect your home and family should things go sideways. Prepping is prepping is prepping.

This, like any other disaster, assumes certain things.

• The grid could go down.
• Emergency services and first responders may not be there.
• What you have on hand is what you have with which to survive,
• If you’re away from home, the trip back could be difficult.

An attack like this could have very longterm effects because, as I mentioned above, once it gets into a system, it’s unstoppable. It wipes clean all the date, the information stored, the functions. It would take a long time to come back from that.

SURVIVAL TIP: CASH ON HAND

An event in the news this spring reminds us of a key survival and preparedness tip – the importance of cash.

Preparedness isn’t just a bunch of gear you buy, or a checklist you follow in case of disaster (though those are part of preparedness). Preparedness is a mindset. Considering the preparations you’ve made, what are you prepared for? How many different scenarios does a single prep make you ready for?

That depends. But if you’ve made preps, then the more scenarios they protect you from, the better they are.

For example, if you’ve got six months of food stashed where you can access it, that covers you for any scenario in which food is difficult or impossible to obtain for up to six months. The exact reason why the normal supplies of food are unavailable only matters for estimation as to whether your preps will outlast the crisis.

GRID DOWN

Near the end of April, the city of San Francisco experienced a massive blackout. The outage extended to over 90,000 businesses and residences, leaving multiple neighborhoods (commercial and residential) without power from about 9AM to 4PM.

The cause was a catastrophic failure of a large circuit breaker at a power substation, causing a fire at that substation.

Here’s the most interesting quote from the article:

Johnny Sadoon, owner of Sutter Fine Foods on Nob Hill, sat against a register eating vanilla ice cream from a Häagen-Dazs carton. He figured he had but a few hours before he should start to worry about the food going bad and the ice cream melting in the freezers.

He had kept the store open despite the blackout and a few customers perused the darkened aisles, but because the credit card machine doesn’t work without power, sales were few and far between.

“No one pays cash anymore,” he said, spoon in hand as a siren wailed outside. “I’m angry. I’m annoyed.”

So this owner was prepared enough that he was set to withstand the likely duration of outage. He was ready to continue doing business, and would not suffer the sorts of product losses various other food businesses suffered.

BLACKOUTS

I was in California during the rolling blackouts right before Enron collapsed. I didn’t have much sympathy for it and felt the Californians brought it on themselves. Enron was saying it was a lack of power production, and no wonder. You can’t build a nuclear plant because it might explode like an atomic bomb. You can’t build coal or fossil fuel plants because they pollute. You can’t build hydro power because it affects the natural streams and waterways. And you can’t build wind power because all those turbines ruin the view (I’m not joking, this was an actual complaint I heard several times back then all over the state). So that leaves solar, and it just doesn’t have the capacity to power everything we need it to.

And then it turned out the real reason for the blackouts was monkey-business from a corrupt energy company: Enron.

So there are many things that commonly cause massive blackouts today. It doesn’t have to be an EMP attack on the US. It could be a bad storm damaging part of the grid. It could be corporate malfeasance. Or it could be a simple equipment failure, either due to poor maintenance practices, or due to Murphy’s Law and completely unexpected.

When the blackouts hit my neighborhood, they lasted longer than a day. I lived in an apartment and as I got hungry, I tried to find something to eat. The microwave was down, as was the electric range, so I wouldn’t be cooking anything at home. I walked a few blocks to the nearest shopping area and found that all fast food places were closed down, as was the local grocery store. None could function or do business without power. And so I had to be hungry until the power came back because everything in my pantry required cooking, but I had no ability to cook.

When night fell, I had no candles and my activities became limited with the lack of light.

CASH

Back to the store owner in San Francisco this year. What if you lived in that neighborhood? What if you were just passing through on that day and hour?

Let’s imagine the scenario in a more rural location. You need gas or something else from the local convenience store and gas station, and it’s the last stop for the next 60 miles. The owner is sitting there, ready to process cash even though the credit machine and ATM are dead. If you were there today, would you be able to buy gas? Or food? Or drink?

My recommendation: go to the ATM today. Pull out your max daily limit (for most folks, this will be either $200 or $300.) It’s probably going to be in $20 bills.

Now stash it somewhere in your car. Put it in there, well hidden from anyone who might be looking, and forget about it until you need it. Maybe do it again next week, and again on the week after, and you’ll have nearly $1000 in cash in your car.

That’s a small enough sum that it won’t hurt too bad if anything did happen to it (theft or fire), and also small enough that asset forfeiture from the DEA wouldn’t come into play. Technically, they could hit you on only $20, but that’s a lot harder to make stick to the accusation than an ice chest with $30k of cash.

But with that cash in the car, you’re ready. If you pass through that neighborhood where the power is out and you really need to buy something that can’t wait until the next stop, you’re not stuck waiting for power to come back to the credit card machine. As long as the owner is taking cash, you’re good to go. (I’m not so sure he’d take silver or gold bullion. How’s he going to check the current exchange rate?)

Or perhaps something goes wrong with your bank accounts. I was once on the road in weak cell phone area and a funds transfer into my bank account had failed, bouncing various credit card payments and such that as I drove, I had no idea that I went from having 5 figures available to negative numbers. Then I was at that truck stop with no way to buy gas or food, and not enough gas in the tank to go any farther. I sat there for hours, making calls to various financial institutes when I could get a phone signal, and waiting for them to sort out what had gone wrong.

If I’d had cash then as I’m recommending today, I could have made the rest of my journey that day and made calls from my hotel. Without cash, I was stranded.

At home you may want to stock away even more, but then again your home is likely more defensible than a vehicle. A large safe, especially if concealed, could be a good place to lay up three or six months’ of expenses.

Be prepared. Don’t rely on the power grid and the credit grid.

What is Sharia Law and how it affects Americans

Most important to know and understand is that Islam is first a “political organization” of totalitarianism – NO individual rights. With it comes Sharia law. Under Sharia, it is the duty of every Muslim to act as Mohamed commands – it is not about Allah – it is all about Mohamed’s militarized slave society surviving on the “host.

INFILTRATION

Ninety-one percent of all the refugees in the U.S. are on welfare. Dictator Obama has reached his goal of importing “at least 10,000” Syrians ahead of schedule which means he could easily increase the number to 11,000 or more by the end of this fiscal year on Sept. 30. Then there is next year. At the United Nations refugee summit on September 20, Obama will announce his goal for the number of refugees brought into the U.S. for fiscal 2017.

THE ARRIVAL of these refugees is a huge threat to our already dwindling free society. There are three stages of Sharia and how implemented in our communities.

1 – The Muslim is weak– this is with a one percent population. It means there is a “hidden” Sharia. Most practices are within the homes, and local mosques. It is not for public consumption and/or shared with any outsiders. They are peaceful.

2 – The Muslim is in good standing – with an increase of population to two percent, they begin their lobbying efforts. These lobbying efforts take place in our prisons, poorer neighborhoods and our schools and universities eventually, to our legislators.

3 – The Muslim in Power – When the population goes beyond three percent, power accelerates and intimidation tactics begin. This is the “penetration stage” and the current status in many communities in states including Texas, Michigan, Mississippi, Kentucky, Kansas, Virginia and West Virginia. There are many examples of how radical Islam and Sharia are slithering onto our land in an effort to transform America as it has Europe.

For example, an increasing number of public American schools with Muslim students are holding Islamic prayers towards Mecca while public American universities continue to build Muslim-only washing facilities such as the one at the Eastern Michigan University. In addition, more than a dozen universities like George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. have footbaths, many installed in new buildings.

Additionally, in 2013, Skokie School District 68 in Illinois became the first US school district to celebrate “Eid al-Adha,” a Muslim high day, as a school holiday, in lieu of Veterans Day. In 2014, Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado became the first high school to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, replacing “One nation under God,” with “One nation under Allah.”

With GROWING ISLAMIC populations, comes accelerated power and with an effort to subjugate the nations to Islamic laws even indirectly. The goal is to control freedom of speech, liberty and expression, the media and the U.S. Constitution to the point of enslavement. As we speak, there are many front groups under the guise of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Sharia Law v. The United States Constitution

Article VI of the U.S. Constitution says the document crafted by our Forefathers shall be the supreme law of the land. Therefore, when we compare Sharia covenants to the U.S. Constitution it is solid as to why the two cannot Co-Exist. In a side-by-side comparison, aside from the obvious, the following comparison chart shows why the U.S. Constitution and Sharia Law can never co-exist.

The U.S. Constitution Article 6:  “This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby.” 1st Amendment:  “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”    2nd Amendment: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” 5th, 6th, and 7thAmendments: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime… without due process of law.” “ Public trial by an impartial jury.” AND “the right of trial by jury shall be preserved.” 8th Amendment: “…nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” 14th Amendment: “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. “

Under Sharia and the Quran “The source of legal rulings for all acts of those who are morally responsible is Allah. There is only one law, which ought to be followed, and that is the Sharia.”   Quran 4:89.: “Those who reject Islam must be killed. If they turn back (from Islam), take hold of them and kill them wherever you find them. Under Section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code Blasphemy merits the death penalty:  Speech defaming Islam or Muhammad is considered “blasphemy” and is punishable by death or imprisonment. Non-Muslims are not to harbor any hostility toward the Islamic state or give comfort to those who disagree with Islamic government. Under historic and modern dhimmi laws, non-Muslims cannot possess swords, firearms, or weapons of any kind. Muhammad said, “No Muslim should be killed for killing a Kafir (infidel).” Non-Muslims are prohibited from testifying against Muslims. A woman’s testimony is equal to half of a man’s. Under Quran, 5:38 punishments are barbaric. “Cut off the hands of thieves, whether they are male or female, as punishment for what they have done – a deterrent from Allah.” AND with Sura 24:2. A raped woman is punished. Additionally, “The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication – flog each of them with a hundred stripes.” Under dhimmi laws enforced in modern Sharia states, Jews, Christians and other non-Muslims are not equal to Muslims before the law. Under Sharia law, women, girls, apostates, homosexuals, and “blasphemers” are all denied equality under the law.

It is clear that under our Republic there is no room for Sharia.

With the help of the Muslim Brotherhood and the many funding front groups it umbrellas, the 7^th century barbarity of Sharia is advocated in many states. A 2011 study by The Center for Security Policy, revealed 50 legal cases across 23 states, all published appellate cases, where Sharia was either relevant or highly relevant to the arguments or outcome of the case. Thus, there is a real need to have legislation, which focuses on American Laws for American Courts

Such legislation outlawing Sharia based on its unconstitutionality passed in states such as Kansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Challenged by Eric Holder’s Department of Justice, Oklahoma’s 2013 legislation prohibits the application of foreign law, including but not limited to Sharia, when it would violate fundamental constitutional rights such as due process and equal protection. The law modeled after Oklahoma’s is pending in dozens of other states. Therefore, it is imperative that We the People do not allow our courts to be bullied, intimidated, or terrorized into implementing Sharia law.

Ironically, all the women groups advocating for this co-existence, will be the first to lose their rights under Sharia. Apparently, they have never read or even perused the Quran – As under 2.223 it states, “Your women are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like . . . .”

ADDITIONALLY, men can divorce the wife simply by saying three times, “I divorce you.” Yet, there are no rights bestowed to women for divorce – or otherwise for that matter. Under Sharia, women are brutally mistreated and held as slaves to the man. A man can marry a monotheist as long as she converts and vows to raise the children under Islam. Women have no such rights; and to save “honor” blood must be spilled.

This influx of refugees with hidden Islamic agendas is another brick in the wall to the destruction of America – our home of the free. We are a tolerant society. We allow our Constitution to extend to those who are not citizens, we strive to live and let live. Yet, we are the ones under siege by terrorists who continue to bully and belly ache that we are phobic, racists, and irrational because we want to keep the Republic of fairness and justice for all. Without a watchful eye, the intolerance of radical Islam will ultimately change the Republic given to us by our Forefathers.

KNOW THIS Sharia has consequences. It cannot co-exist with our Constitution. We need to fight against it, stand up to it. We the People need to continue to stay on top of our elected officials and push to have the American Laws for American Courts enacted in every state. It is absolute truth that the Muslim Brotherhood is alive and well in 100 countries all with ties to radical Islam. And they are alive and well in the U.S.A.

Islam wishes to destroy all states and governments anywhere on the face of the earth, which are opposed to the ideology and program of Islam regardless of the country or the nation that rules it. The purpose of Islam is to set up a State based on its own ideology and program. There is no room for the U.S. Constitution in Islam and there is no room for Sharia in our United States.
